Case: Stopping synchronization to prevent content overwriting

As a support representative for Syncer, I help customers with a variety of questions and problems every day. In this blog post, I'll discuss an interesting case from the last sprint, in which a customer encountered a specific problem and how I resolved it.

Case: Stopping synchronization to prevent content overwriting

The problem

A customer called us in a panic and was very upset because all her manual changes in Shopify had been overwritten by the Lightspeed sync. She had spent a lot of time adjusting categories, content, and the structure of her online store, but these changes were repeatedly undone by Syncer's automatic sync.

The cause

The sync between Lightspeed and Shopify was still active, causing Lightspeed to continually push the original content and structure to Shopify. This meant that any changes the client made in Shopify were overwritten the next time the sync was run. The client was unaware of this and felt powerless, as all her work seemed to be lost.

The solution

  1. Explanation and advice: We first reassured the client and explained that the sync was performed daily, but could also be disabled. We also explained that this could actually have a positive effect on SEO, as a lot changes during a migration. Content consistency between both platforms would be better if the content was first updated in Lightspeed and then pushed to Shopify.

  • Strategic approach: We advised the client to first make the content and categorization changes in Lightspeed. This would ensure the changes were properly synced to Shopify without being lost. This way, the content would already be indexed by search engines, and the impact on the SEO score would be minimal, as no major changes would be made to the content upon launch.

  • Disabling category menu sync: After all the desired changes were successfully implemented in Lightspeed, we disabled category menu sync. This gave the client full control over the category layout in Shopify, without it being overwritten again by Lightspeed.

  • Testing and confirmation: We checked together with the customer whether everything was set up correctly and whether the changes were now retained.

The result

This approach allowed the client to maintain her desired structure and content in Shopify, while Lightspeed continued to sync the category content correctly. She was relieved and happy that everything was now working correctly. Although her previous work had been lost, she was happy that the issue had been resolved and that she had received SEO advice. Now everything is set up correctly, and she's ready to launch her online store soon!

Important lessons

  • When switching from Lightspeed to Shopify, be aware of active syncs so you don't get unwanted transfers.

  • Make content and category changes in Lightspeed first while syncing is still active, so they are correctly included and not overwritten by Syncer.

  • Disable syncing where needed to gain more control over your store layout in Shopify.

By quickly identifying this issue and guiding the customer step by step, we were able to turn a stressful situation into a successful solution. This emphasizes the importance of good synchronization management during webshop migrations!
